Vyacheslav Shevchenko was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1949. At the age of seventeen, he entered the National Art College of Uzbekistan, as a painting major.  In 1970, he graduated Art College, and entered the National Theatre-Art Institute of A.N. Ostrovsky (currently the National Art Institute of Behzad), as a drawing major.  As a student, Shevchenko was presented a “Scholarship of Academician Tansikbayev”, and then a “National Scholarship of Lenin” - the highest award a student could receive.

Shevchenko graduated from Theatre-Art Institute in 1976, and was invited to teach there as a drawing professor.  In 1982, Shevchenko entered a PhD program in Repin’s Academy, St. Petersburg, Russia.  Working on his PhD, Shevchenko created a textbook Plastic Human Anatomy and Drawing that was published in 1996.

Shevchenko completed his PhD in 1983, and returned to his native Tashkent, to teach drawing in Theatre-Art Institute.  In 1984, Shevchenko became a Dean of Fine Arts Department in the same institute.  In 1985, he switched to being a Head of Drawing Department, all this along with being a professor of drawing and painting.

Apart from his teaching career, Shevchenko was also actively engaged in his creative work as an artist.  In these years he exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in his country and abroad.  In 1987, Shevchenko became a member of Artists’ Union of USSR.  In 1996, Shevchenko took a position of a Vice President of Art College of Behzad.  Then, after 1997, he decided to leave his administrative career to become a self-employed artist.  In the year 2000, Shevchenko was presented an “Order of Friendship between Nations” for his great contributions to the art of Uzbekistan.

In 2003, Shevchenko came to US to take part in New York Artexpo.  That year he became a permanent resident of US, and since then, he participated in dozens of solo and group art exhibits.  Today, Vyacheslav Shevchenko lives in Pennsylvania and dedicates most of his time to his creative work.
